The placodonts were a strange group of swimming reptiles that appeared in the middle Triassic and became extinct at the Triassic/Jurassic boundary.  They were heavy-bodied swimmers that mostly fed on shellfish: their teeth were specialized for picking shells from rocks and crushing them between their jaws.  In the Triassic seas they would have been the equivalent of modern walruses.
